If you take terbinafine tablets for a long time, there's a small chance that they can affect your liver. This happens to less than 1 in 1,000 people. Your doctor may ask you to have a blood test to check that your liver is working properly.

There is not much information about how much terbinafine from the tablets passes into breast milk, but information shows that it's a very small amount. However, your doctor or pharmacist may recommend other antifungal medicines which might be better while breastfeeding.

Appropriate studies have not been performed on the relationship of age to the effects of terbinafine tablets in children with fungal infections of the fingernails or toenails. Safety and efficacy have not been established.

Appropriate studies performed to date have not demonstrated geriatric-specific problems that would limit the usefulness of terbinafine tablets in the elderly. However, elderly patients are more likely to have age-related liver, kidney, or heart problems, which may require caution in patients receiving terbinafine tablets.

Brittle (crumbly) nails and a whitish-yellowish or brownish discoloration are typical signs of nail fungus. The nails may also become thicker and change shape. The affected part of the nail sometimes detaches from the nail bed. The treatment options for nail fungus include nail polishes and creams as well as tablets. Nail polishes and creams are available in pharmacies without a prescription.

To treat fungal nail infections from inside the body, you can take tablets that inhibit the growth of fungi or kill them. They are all prescription-only. Terbinafine and itraconazole are typically used for this purpose.

In treatment with pauses, 400 mg of itraconazole is taken daily for a week (two 100 mg tablets in the morning and two in the evening). That is followed by a three-week break in treatment. This treatment also lasts three months or less.

Tablets for the treatment of nail fungus have been tested in several studies. All participants had an infection on their toenails caused by a skin fungus. Overall, the study results showed that tablets are considerably more effective than nail polishes or creams.

Pillans and Boyd studied 12 cases of granulocytopenia associated with terbinafine use in Australia, one patient having agranulocytosis. The mean age of the participants was 64 years. Sex was reported in 11 patients and all but one was a woman. Time to onset of neutropenia/agranulocytosis was 4-5 weeks in most cases. Neutropenia was typically severe with neutrophil counts

This medicine is not recommended if you currently have a liver problem because it may make the problem worse. If you had a liver problem in the past and your liver is functioning normally now, your doctor may prescribe Lamisil tablets but may want to check your liver function before and during treatment with this medicine. Your doctor might take blood tests to monitor your liver function. In case of abnormal test results, he or she may ask you to stop taking Lamisil.

Fungal nail infections usually take longer to heal than fungal skin infections. You will usually take the tablets for anywhere from 6 weeks to 3 months. But, if you have a nail infection of the big toe or your nails grow very slowly, you may need to take the tablets for up to 6 months.

It may take several months after you stop taking Lamisil tablets for your nail to look completely normal. That is because the deformed part of the nail has to grow out and be replaced by a healthy nail.

Immediately telephone your doctor or Poisons Information Centre (telephone number 13 11 26), or go to Accident and Emergency at your nearest hospital if you think that you or anyone else may have taken too many Lamisil tablets. Do this even if there are no signs of discomfort or poisoning. Keep the telephone numbers for these places handy.

Be careful driving, operating machinery or doing jobs that require you to be alert while you are taking Lamisil tablets until you know how it affects you. This medicine can cause tiredness, sleepiness, dizziness or lightheadedness in some people. If you have any of these symptoms, do not drive, use machines, or do anything else that could be dangerous.

Tell your doctor or pharmacist as soon as possible if you do not feel well while you are taking Lamisil tablets, even if you do not think it is connected with the medicine. All medicines can have side effects. Sometimes they are serious, but most of the time they are not. You may need medical treatment if you get some of the side effects.

1. Oral Lamisil is indicated in the treatment of ringworm (tinea corporis, tinea cruris and tinea pedis) where oral therapy is considered appropriate due to the site, severity or extent of the infection.

The use of Lamisil tablets has not been adequately studied in patients with renal impairment and is therefore not recommended in this population (see section 4.4 Special warnings and precautions for use and section 5.2 Pharmacokinetic properties).

Lamisil tablets are contraindicated for patients with chronic or active hepatic disease. Before prescribing Lamisil tablets, a liver function test should be performed and any pre-existing liver disease should be assessed.

Hepatotoxicity may occur in patients with and without pre-existing liver disease therefore periodic monitoring (after 4-6 weeks of treatment) of liver function test is recommended. Lamisil tablets should be immediately discontinued in case of elevation of liver function test.

Very rare cases of serious liver failure (some with a fatal outcome, or requiring liver transplant) have been reported in patients treated with Lamisil tablets. In the majority of liver failure cases the patients had serious underlying systemic conditions (see sections 4.3 Contraindications and 4.8 Undesirable effects).

Patients prescribed Lamisil tablets should be instructed to report immediately any signs or symptoms suggestive of liver dysfunction such as pruritus, unexplained persistent nausea, decreased appetite, anorexia, jaundice, vomiting, fatigue, right upper abdominal pain, dark urine, or pale stools.
