Train Sim World (abbreviated to TSW) is a train simulation game series developed by Dovetail Games. It was released on 24 July 2018.[2] For the first time, Train Sim World allows players to walk around the game world in a first-person mode. This mode is utilised in tutorials, scenarios and services where the first-person mode is required to complete tasks such as refuelling, navigation a building or changing switches.[2]

The fourth version, Train Sim World 2020, is available for Microsoft Windows, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4, featuring four routes: Great Western Express, Long Island Rail Road (Penn Station to Hicksville, Hempstead Branch, Atlantic Terminal, Belmont), Main-Spessart Bahn (Aschaffenburg Hbf to Gemünden (Main)), and Northern Trans-Pennine (Manchester Victoria to Leeds route add-on), as well as Sand Patch Grade for Windows only. The 2020 edition featured a Digital Deluxe edition containing a bonus route containing Caltrain's Peninsula Corridor (San Francisco 4th and King Street to San Jose Diridon route add-on).

The Preserved Collection allows players to import their previously owned Train Sim World and Train Sim World 2020 bundled routes and DLC into the new game. This means players can continue using them without the need to pay for them again. Dovetail Games announced the game would be delayed on 16 July, with a rescheduled release date of 20 August, from the original 6 August.[7] This was to allow them to make "Preserved Collection" add-ons compatible with their new Scenario Designer. They confirmed that content from this category will not be compatible with their new Livery Designer, due to a change in the way they develop trains, although such compatibility might be provided in a future upgrade (this has since been confirmed; Livery Designer compatibility for East Coastway was included in a February 2021 patch, with more routes to follow[8]). They also announced within one of their Community Q&A livestreams that their Northeast Corridor route add-on, as well as their Amtrak SW1000R and CSX GP40-2 loco addons were not going to be part of the "Preserved Collection" due to technical issues.

On 19 July 2022 Rivet Games and Dovetail Games released BR Class 484: Isle of Wight 2022. A train and route DLC featuring the Isle of Wight and the BR Class 484, going from Ryde Pier Head to Shanklin.

Nahverkehr Dresden released on 9 September 2021. It spans the 55-kilometre line between Riesa and Dresden, and also included the 23-kilometre fast line which runs parallel to the main route. The 5-kilometre branch to Großenhain and 9-kilometre branch to Meißen Triebischtal are also included. The route includes the DB BR 442 'Talent 2', DB BR 143, DB BR 146.2, MRCE BR 185 and DB BR 363 as the primary trains, along with the fourth generation Doppelstockwagen coaches and cab car. The DB BR 101 DLC and DB BR 406 are layered on and includes intercity and ICE services that use the fast line.

Train Sim World 2 features a livery editor and a scenario editor, with further plans on adding features to the current toolset. While previously stating that trains in the Preserved Collection would not be compatible with the livery editor, Dovetail Games announced on their 10 November 2020 roadmap that compatibility was in production.[12]

Train Sim World 3 tries to spice up its experience with an emphasis on a new dynamic weather engine and a more refined training mode, as well as an update to the graphical engine. All of this is in an effort to make the sim both look and feel more realistic.

Snow accurately blanketing the top of the train and getting kicked up as the train whizzes along the track, rain giving a nice gloss to the environment; these are all nice touches. Not to mention the weather affects the gameplay, too (more on that later).

While some locos function similarly, such as the electric commuter trains, they all have different attributes, layouts, and capabilities. For instance, the small Class 375 commuter feels almost like a Fisher-Price model with how simple it controls, whereas the German-made ICE BR401DB/BR403 FB high-speed trains feel almost like spaceships by comparison.

While Train Sim World 3 brings some enhancements to the franchise's formula, they do little to truly amplify the experience. Yet this remains one of the strongest train sims on the market, and it still has room to grow.

One major change is that trains have been decoupled from their parent routes, and this has been facilitated by a new training area inspired by a famous German test track. This scenic Bavarian-esque sandbox plays host to all of your currently owned locos, and really gives you the freedom to examine them in 3D space and appreciate all of their details. Even more importantly, it provides crucial training exercises and the opportunity to familiarise yourself with their features in a no-pressure environment.

Thanks, my 6 year old has got me into this. He loves the big American freight trains incidentally and is very excited at the inclusion of BNSF's for the first time on console.We have picked up quite a few of the TSW2 maps and wondered do you know if the graphics are updated when you move your already purchased routes over to TSW3 ? Or is there a plan to update them too the swanky new engine gradually.Thanks really enjoyed the review.

Edit: OK watched some vids...this review didn't make me appreciate just how technical the game is at driving a train and maintaining control over all the intricate parameters that need balancing, maintaining and adjusting. Watched some bloke play it with proper train controllers and it looked really challenging and satisfying. Shame the performance on consoles doesn't quite cut it and there's no mod scene that can help out.

I'm surprised nothing was said about the fact there is no save function, which while having 2 hour runs and bugs galore doesn't make for a fun experience if you roll past a red signal a few feet or a bug shuts you down. The save function in the past versions didn't work well but it at least was there.

EXTREME WEATHER - New volumetric skies bring a transformed atmosphere to routes. Lightning dances among intense storms, the roar of thunder competing with the sound of machinery. Wind hammers the side of your train. Feel total immersion as you learn the art of defensive driving to stay in control.

Players simply need to unlock each door manually to fix the passenger door knob bug in Train Sim World 3. While frustrating, this is the easiest fix for this bug that the developers have not yet fixed, and thus allows players to enjoy the game and navigate trains without any hindrances.

You can turn on AWS and Vigilance on every british train, PZB and SIFA for the Germans, some have LZB. All the trains have their safety devices, but they are off as default. Usually located with the fuses or on a panel in the cab. You can also turn of the in cab signal hud and not know the aspect before you get there. Give it a go ?

As David said, safety systems can be applied to most of the trains in the game but are deactivated at the start so not to create a headache for novices and casual players. HUD elements like next signal aspect, upcoming speed limits and even the speedometer and gradient indicator can be turned off in the settings for a more realistic experience.

When it comes to train simulators, none do it better than Dovetail Games. The studio is the name behind the widely popular Train Sim World franchise that has dominated train sim fans' lives ever since the first iteration in 2018. Fast forward down the tracks and Dovetail Games are back again with its third instalment and what could be the best train simulator yet.

Similar to previous editions, the base game ships with a handful of trains and routes. Train Sim World 3 is no different, with nine different trains in various liveries shipping in the standard edition, spread out across three different routes: Schnellfahrstrecke Kassel - Würzburg Route, Cajon Pass: Barstow - San Bernardino Route, and Southeastern Highspeed: London St Pancras - Ashford Intl & Faversham Route. A further two steam trains are available if you pick up the deluxe edition as it comes bundled with the stunning Spirit of Steam Liverpool Lime Street - Crewe route. It's a stellar line-up of trains, which is further aided by the extensive add-ons that have been introduced over the years.

The first thing that sets Train Sim World 3 apart from its predecessors is an all new Training Centre, which lets players get to grips with the trains and learn about the safety systems on each. The Training Centre is inspired by a real-world test track in Germany, and essentially adds another route to the game due to its size. Train Sim World 2 players can also continue enjoying their previously purchased routes and locomotives within Train Sim World 3, but any new features will not be included (although the fact that you can take old trains for a spin is enough on its own).
